The problem of Biscutella laevigata L

, : The problem of Biscutella laevigata L. Zeitschr Indukt Abstamm U Vererbungsl 67(1): 41-57

This crucifer inhabits central Europe, and is subdivided into more than a dozen "subspecies." Some of the latter are diploid (2n= 18), others tetra-ploid (2n = 36). The tetraploid races have a continuous areal including Switzerland, Tyrol, Italy, and a part of the Balkans. The diploid races have a discontinuous areal (mostly river valleys in Germany and Austria). The diploids are regarded as inter-glacial or even pre-glacial relicts; the tetraploids are derived from the diploids, and are post-glacial immigrants in the territory now occupied by them. Tetraploids show signs of a chromosome unbalance (chromosome number 34-37); despite this they are successful colonisers and in some respects superior to the diploids.
