The proportion of assimilation and respiration in poplar leaves

, : The proportion of assimilation and respiration in poplar leaves. Ber Deusch Bot Ges 84(2): 55-63

The gas exchange of intact individual leaves was measured under artificial illumination for cuttings of 4 species of Populus by infra-red determination of the CO2 in the gas stream. Different light intensities, and leaves of different ages, were used. Under favorable conditions, leaf respiration accounted for less than 5% of the simultaneous photosynthesis in mature leaves, though the proportion was greater in developing and in senescent leaves.
