The reflection of inhibition in the electroencephalogram of animals

, : The reflection of inhibition in the electroencephalogram of animals. Trudy Inst Vysshei Nerv Deyatel Nosti Acad Nauk Sssr Ser Fiziol [Transl] 3: 70-84

During the development of the cases of cortical inhibition studied (delay, extinction, extinction with reinforcement, and extinction due to combination of weak stimulations) the changes of bioelectrical activity of the cortex and sequence of their appearance are similar. The development of inhibition is accompanied at first by a decrease in the ability of the cortex to assimilate stimuli, then by the appearance of a regular rhythm, followed by delta waves, and finally, by the decrease of intensity of the biopotentials. At different stages of its development, inhibition is thus variously reflected in the electroencephalogram. The electrophysiological expression of inhibition cannot be reduced to any one form of change of cortical bioelectrical activity. The appearance of delta waves, to which the presence of inhibition is often related, is only one of the stages of the bioelectrical activity of the cortex when inhibition sets in. During the development of inhibition, we did not always observe delta waves; they appeared for a short time only. This is why the lack of delta waves cannot be an absolute sign of absence of inhibition.
