The relation of nerve polarization to monophasicity of its response

, : The relation of nerve polarization to monophasicity of its response. Jour Cell And Comp Physiol 1(3): 371-386

Depression of nerve function near a crush has been followed by recording demarcation potential, threshold of the most irritable fibers, and number of fibers capable of responding, at various distances from the crush and at various times after injury. The gradient of depression from uninjured to injured nerve is sharpest immediately after crushing, when the nerve conducts close to the crush; then the gradient becomes flatter and conduction ceases further away, followed by a partial recovery with conduction again occurring close to the injury. The demarcation potential at the point of block is much greater than in the case of depression by drugs, etc. Based on this and previously reported experiments, a theoretical discussion attempts to account for monophasicity of action potentials led either from across a depolarized injured region or from across a non-depolarized region depressed in function reversibly by various agents. It is concluded that depolarization is not essential to monophasicity of response, that, in fact, depolarization of the injured end is the cause of diphasicity in a killed nerve only because the polarization is then directed across the end of the live tissue and not, as normally, along its surface.
