The relationship between influenza and pneumonia

, : The relationship between influenza and pneumonia. Journal of Hygiene 47(4): 434-448

95 cases, of which 78 were pneumonia and 4 were fatal, were studied during an inter-epidemic period. 152 cases, of which 57 were clinical influenza and 70 were pneumonia, were studied during the subse quent epidemic period; there were 17 deaths, the age group over 65 yrs. being most affected. In the earlier series, males predominated, but in the later series the sex distribution was about equal. Tests for influenza virus infection, serological or cultural, were positive in one case of pneumococcal pneumonia and in one contact in the inter-epidemic period, and in 59 cases and one contact in the epidemic period. Pneumococci were found in 81 cases of the earlier period, and in 83 of the later period. Staphylococci were isolated from 20 cases, of which 10 were fatal, of the epidemic series. The relationship of the influenza virus to bacterial infection of the lower respiratory tract is discussed, especially its role in bronchiectasis, congestive heart failure, and bronchitis.
