The seasonal vertical distribution of wireworms in the soil in relation to their control in the Pacific Northwest

, : The seasonal vertical distribution of wireworms in the soil in relation to their control in the Pacific Northwest. Jour Agric Res 65(3): 125-142

Trends in the numbers of wireworms (Elateridae) occurring at different depths in the soil were studied in relation to soil temp., moisture, and cropping conditions. A total of from 10 to 20 one-sq.-ft. soil units to a depth of 18 or 24 in. were examined for wireworms on each observation date. In the spring there is an upward migration of wireworms from the subsoil layers to the surface layers when temps. range from 40[degree] to 68[degree]F at the 6-inch depth. Wireworms leave the surface 3 inches and return to deeper layers when surface temps. of 75[degree]F and above are reached. Careful planning to avoid seeding early in May. when the highest % of wireworms are in the surface 6 in. of soil, will tend to minimize the loss of seed of summer crops from wireworm feeding. The effectiveness of soil fumigants is related to wireworm depth distribution. CS2 would be most effective in July, Aug., or Sept., whereas naphthalene would be more effective during April, May, and June. The time to attract wireworms to any form of baits is also during April, May, and June.
