The sex of about 2000 living individuals of P. maxima was detd. at the fisheries of Australia and Palau, and it was found that d1 d" outnumber [male] [male] in younger or smaller shells. The number of [female] [female] increased in accordance with growth. Thus pro-tandry was supposed to occur in this sp. Further it was found that this sp. undergoes sex change from [female] to [male]. 135 distinctly [female] specimens were kept alive in breeding cages which were left in the sea in June 1938. 3, 6 and 73% of them changed sex to [male] [male] after 1, 3 and 10 mos., respectively. No cases of reversion to the 9 condition were observed in these changed [male] [male].
