, : The technique of psychotherapy with alcoholics. Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol 22: 69-80

A psychotherapeutic technique designed for use with alcoholic patients. The therapist is advised to be more active than with other types of patients, and to thoroughly explore the areas of marriage, employment, debts, and the alcoholic's intrapsychic problems. Although the uncovering role of therapy is essential in itself it is, often, insufficient and focus is accordingly given to the immediate situation of the patient. The therapist is urged to instigate hostility in appropriate instances, to see the spouse if necessary, force the alcoholic to see himself and assist him in acquiring an ego that can perform.
