Ticks were labelled by allowing them to feed on animals injected intraperitoneally the previous day with a physiological solution of glycine containing C14 in its carboxyl group. The larvae of Ixodes ricinus, fed on mice given 5.8 [mu]/g became engorged and gained the same weight as the control group. Nymphs metamorphosed from these larvae showed less radioactivity than the larvae. In the same way, the degree of radioactivity was reduced in the nymphs which had emerged from the larvae fed on mice given 3.1 [mu]/g of C14; 7 months after molting the radioactivity of the nymphs was 10 /xc/g. Nymphs fed on rabbits injected intraperitoneally with 6.4 [mu]/g of C14 became normally engorged. Their radioactivity was very high after feeding and decreased as they approached molting. Three months after molting the live females radiated up to 120 impulses/min; ground up they radiated up to 423; live males radiated up to 80. The method described is extremely reliable for labeling 2 successive phases of development in ixodic ticks, i.e., by feeding the younger on animals injected with a maximum tolerated dose of Cl4-iabeled compounds.
