3 problems are considered: host range, type of parasitism, and the conditions controlling the appearance of the fungus in nature. Cross inoculation exps. showed there is only 1 strain of the fungus, as all isolates could infect several genera of conifers. A descr. is given of the ecto- and endophytic growth of the organism. Inoculation exps. in the laboratory gave better infection at 15than at 0C. Tables of soil and air temps. during winter for altitudes of 446 and 1500 m. are given.
