Ultra-structure of the liver in bile intoxication by choleperitoneum in the rat

, : Ultra-structure of the liver in bile intoxication by choleperitoneum in the rat. Rev Int Hepatol 16(2): 289-305

Total and partial choleperitoneum was studied in rats. Significant anomalies appear, particularly in active transport of undetermined substances from the sinusoids to the Kuppfer cells and thence to the hepatocytes. There are definite signs of hyperactivity of some hepatocytes and degenerative processes in organelles of others. Bile canaliculi and ducts are enlarged and microvilli are rare and in places balloon-like. All signs attributed to bile intoxication are not the cause of cholestasis but the consequence of irritant agents excreted in the bile. Hypercholesterolemia and a marked increase in serum levels of alkaline phosphatase are noted; the increased enzymatic activity may be related to maximum hypertrophy of the Golgi apparatus.
