Use of nonspecific bacterial vaccine in chronic coughs and the common cold in children

, : Use of nonspecific bacterial vaccine in chronic coughs and the common cold in children. Arch Pediatrics 59(1): 50-56

380 children, 18 mos. to 15 yrs., were studied. Bacterial vaccine of Eberthella typhosa containing 1000 million organisms per ml. was given in increasing amts., 0.1-1 ml. every few days. After optimum dose was reached some were continued on small monthly doses intradermally. Complete relief was attained in 90%, partial in 8-10%. The hypothesis is advanced that non-specific antigenic properties are present, which stimulate antibody formation. Blood counts showed early leucocytosis and increased PMN after injns. The following day, the blood showed fall in these figures and an increase in large mononuclears.
