Since 1931 the Loeffler medium was replaced by the K tellurite medium (Clauberg II) which was found rather effective with and without addition of serum (Hettche). An allegedly improved Clauberg III was introduced in 1935. This paper attempts an evaluation of Cl II with and without serum and Cl III. 1072 throat cultures were investigated under identical conditions. After 24 hrs. Cl II had 17.07%, Cl II +serum 13.15%, Cl III 10.13%. After 48 hrs.: Cl II 19.86%, Cl II +serum 16.50%, Cl III 15.38% positive findings. The microscopic aspect of diphtheria colonies on Cl III was not found to be conclusive. Considering this point and the lower % and slower growth on Cl III this medium cannot be considered superior to Cl II.
