Arch Gyndkol 152(1): 152-158

Bacteriemia was found in 31 of 62 mothers tested immediately after childbirth: hemolytic streptococci, 4; streptococci, 4; Bacterium coli 5; diplo-cocci, 14; and streptococci and B. coli 2; 27 of the infants showed bacilli in umbilical blood: hemolytic streptococci, 4; streptococci, 2; B. coli 4; a gram-negative, non-hemolytic rod, 13; gram-positive diplococcus, 3; streptococci and B. coli 1. K. concludes that whatever the source of the organisms[long dash]placenta, wounds of cervix and vagina, or extragenital [long dash]the decisive role in parasitic defence cannot be attributed to the uterine wall at this early stage; later the great increase in leucocytes which occurs immediately after, if not during, childbirth and the contraction of the uterus may make further penetration impossible.
