Is tuberculin testing a necessary preliminary to BCG vaccination in Great Britain?

, : Is tuberculin testing a necessary preliminary to BCG vaccination in Great Britain?. Tubercle 54(3): 195-200

BCG vaccination without prior tuberculin testing has been given to 815 children. Those giving reactions of 5 mm or more in diameter at the site of vaccination a week later have been Mantoux tested with 10 TU of avian and mammalian PPDs. The results indicate that direct vaccination is an acceptable procedure in Great Britain which will not produce a reaction of greater severity than is likely to result from a 10 TU Mantoux or standard Heaf test.
