The choice of plastic tubing for organ perfusion experiments

, : The choice of plastic tubing for organ perfusion experiments. Cryobiology 9(6): 569-571

Four types of plastic tubing have been studied to assess their suitability for use in organ-perfusion experiments; the properties considered were oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability, affinity for fatty acids, and freedom from toxicity. Silicone rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene were shown to have unacceptably high gas permeabilities, and silicone rubber and PVC had a high affinity for oleic acid; polyamide (nylon), however, was much less permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide and absorbed as little oleic acid as polyethylene. Rabbit kidneys preserved for 24 hr by hypothermic perfusion using a nylon circuit were found to function as well as those preserved in a conventional circuit. The use of nylon tubing in organ-perfusion experiments is recommended.
