A case study update for natural attenuation of TCE at the Bendix Superfund Site

, : A case study update for natural attenuation of TCE at the Bendix Superfund Site. Proceedings of the Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Organic Chemicals in Ground Water: Prevention, Detection and Remediation Conference 2000(Pages 67-70

The Bendix Superfund site, located in St. Joseph, Michigan, has been the focus of numerous groundwater investigations by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Bosch Braking Systems to evaluate the active reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE). As a result, this site has gained national attention as one of the first sites where natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents was documented by USEPA Kerr Laboratory and others. Biodegradation has proven to be very effective at this site in controlling and reducing TCE in site groundwater. In September 1997, USEPA Region 5 selected monitored natural attenuation as the preferred groundwater remedy for the Bendix Superfund site. After nearly 15 years of study, it is now conclusive that TCE is being extensively attenuated by biological reductive dechlorination. This presentation will specifically address USEPA monitoring requirements for measuring the effectiveness of natural attenuation as a remedy for this site, including an updated discussion of lines of evidence for natural attenuation, natural groundwater setting, contaminant distribution, and migration pathways.
