A comparative study of the effects of four different Rauwolfia preparations administered parenterally

, : A comparative study of the effects of four different Rauwolfia preparations administered parenterally. Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics 120(2): 247-254

Reserpine, deserpidine, rescinnamine, and serpentine were subjected to bioassay for hypotensive potency in human hypertensive patients. The drugs were given parenterally. Reserpine and rescinnamine were most effective with the least number of side reactions. Deserpidine and serpentine were unpredictable in response and were associated with adverse side reactions in a higher frequency. The dose of reserpine was roughly one-third that required of deser-pedine and one-half that required of rescinnamine to produce a similar degree of blood pressure reduction.
