This paper discusses the geographic features of the mass breeding of the water rat in a large area of the forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia in 1956-62. The eruption started on the local breeding grounds, which increased in number until 1959. From 1960 the number of breeding grounds decreased. In the Novosibirsk and Omsk regions the eruptions occurred at the same time but at different rates, while in the Tomsk and Tyumen regions mass breeding started later. The unusual duration of the outbeak (7 years), a period of time not hitherto recorded in this region, is related to the climatic conditions that retarded the growth of the water-rat population in 1956-57 and the localization of home sites. The period of abatement also was retarded. The rats' stay at the breeding grounds was favored by the abundance of precipitation, by the substantial marshiness of the territory and the late harvesting of the crops. In certain localities outbreaks of mass breeding occurred several times. Cessation of mass breeding was observed only in the dry year of 1962.
