A study of human thyroid function by means of radioactive iodine

, : A study of human thyroid function by means of radioactive iodine. Journal of Endocrinology 10(4): 308-310

Classification of a particular case either as euthyroid or hyperthyroid was best made by use of 3 tests: the clinical symptoms, the estimation of BMR and of plasma-bound I (PBI). With the state of thyroid thus classified, no appreciable overlap was found in either the maximum (max.) uptake, the time to reach the max., or in the mean rate of I accumulation by the thyroid during the first 3 hrs., following oral administration of a tracer dose of 100 uc I131. The line of demarcation between the hyperthyroid and the euthyroid was at a maximum uptake of 40% of the administered dose or at a maximum average rate of Iodine accumulation of 6% per hr. during the first 3 hrs. The disappearance rate of I from blood was not so sharply defined in the 2 groups. In the euthyroid group it varied from 8 to 19% per hr., while in the hyperthyroid it ranged between 16 to 34% per hr.
