A survey of the dragonflies of eastern Africa

, : A survey of the dragonflies of eastern Africa. A survey of the dragonflies (Order Odonata) of eastern Africa vii+214p Illus

The area considered here as "Eastern Africa" includes Tanganyika, Kenya, Zanzibar, Mafia Island, Uganda, southern Sudan, Abyssinia (Ethiopia), Somalia, Eritrea, British Somaliland Protectorate and Socotra Island: about 2000 miles in extent from north to south. Material from some of these countries, particularly Ethiopia, was very scanty. Some extensive collecting has been done in Kenya and Uganda, and there is considerable material from Tanganyika, but mostly from the northern and eastern areas. A brief note on habitat indicates that the type of vegetation is not so important as the degree of shade provided. Other factors are temperature, rate of flow (if any) of the water, its salinity, and nature of the bed of the water. The book is primarily a systematic list, with keys, references, descriptions for many spp., some remarks on ecology for a few spp., and distributional data. Lestes disarmatus is described by F. C. Fraser. New taxa described by the author include n. spp. of Pseudagrion (Kenya 1, Uganda 2), Diastatomma (Ruwenzori 1), Gomphidia (Uganda 1), Paragomphus (Kenya 1), Onychogomphus ("Bwamba Forest" 1), Acanthagyna (Uganda 2), Heliaeschna (Ukerewe Island 1), Macromia (Uganda 1), and Trithemis (Uganda 1); n. sspp. in Microgomphus (Uganda 1), Macromia (Kenya 1), Hadrothemis (Uganda 1), and Trithemis (Kenya-Uganda border: Tororo River 1); and the n. genus PARAZYXOMMA (subfam. Zyxommatinae) with type P. flavicans (Zyxomma f. Martin). Male allotypes are describe for Notogomphus dendrohyrax and Macromia pallidinervis, and female allotype for Eleuthemis buettikoferi. The total number of spp. dealt with is about 310. The new name Onychogomphus styx (O. nigrescens Pinhey, not Laidlaw) is proposed.
