Absorption of dextrose from the colon

, : Absorption of dextrose from the colon. Arch Surg 26(1): 134-152

Exps. on 24 dogs showed that dextrose solns. are absorbed at a low rate when placed in the entire colon. Hypertonic solns. (10%) are absorbed little faster than are isotonic solns. When a marked dextrose deficit occurs in the blood, dextrose can be absorbed from the colon approximately as rapidly as it can be from a low ileal loop of the non-insulinized dog. The presence of dextrose in the soln. in the colon, in the concn. used, causes a retardation in the rate of water absorption.
