Acid phosphatase content of the prostatic secretion as indicator for the functional capacity of the gland in acute and chronic prostatitis

, : Acid phosphatase content of the prostatic secretion as indicator for the functional capacity of the gland in acute and chronic prostatitis. Acta Dermato Venereol [helsingfors] 27(1): 13-30

Studying 25 normal subjects between 17 and 54 years, 29 patients with simple urethritis, 3 with acute gonorrheal prostatitis, and 2 with herpes genitalis, the authors believe that the acid phosphatase. content of prostatic secretion under 3,300 phosphatase units is abnormal, while 5,000 is not reduced. 30% of chronic prostatitis cases had less than 3,300 phosphatase units; this enzyme production is almost abolished in acute prostatitis. Therefore it is postulated that the chronic prostatitis that occurs with simple urethritis is associated with functional prostatic impairment.
