Agronomic problems in the Camargue

, : Agronomic problems in the Camargue. Ann Agron [Paris] 15(2): 193-204

The Camargue has been formed by materials accumulating at the Rhone delta from the Wurm, glacial period to the present. The process of delta formation resulted in the Camargue's possessing a pattern of high and low zones. Agricultural production is being carried on at the elevations, while ponds and marshes occupy the depressions. From an agricultural point of view, the characteristic components of soils in the Camargue are salts, giving rise to saline soils of solonchak type. The reclamation of these soils requires the removal of salts by leaching. High evaporation under the climatic conditions prevailing and constant presence of salt in the groundwaters, however, cause difficulties, and an equilibrium could only be reached by the introduction of rice cultivation.
