Alterations in the hemostatic mechanism in the experimental crush syndrome

, : Alterations in the hemostatic mechanism in the experimental crush syndrome. Lab Invest 8(5): 979-986

Following the application of a crushing injury to a hind leg of 2 dogs, no detectable alteration in the hemostatic mechanism was observed. However, after release of the crush there was aprompt activation of fibrinolytic and fibrinogenolytic enzymes, an elevation of circulating fibrinogen, a gradual decrease in the number of circulating platelets and the irregular appearance of a circulating anticoagulant. There was no essential change in the one-stage prothrombin time or in the whole blood coagulation time. The circulating fibrinogen gradually rose after release of the tourniquet in spite of the presence of fibrinolytic and fibrinogenolytic enzyme activity in the blood.
