American Heart Association Monograph Series; Discontinuous conduction in the heart

, : American Heart Association Monograph Series; Discontinuous conduction in the heart. Spooner, P M [Editor], Joyner, R W [Editor], Jalife, J [Editor] American Heart Association Monograph Series; Discontinuous conduction in the heart xx+569p

Discontinuity in cardiac conduction is an important feature of the mechanisms determining the coordination and spread of electrical activation throughout the heart. This book, with papers from more than fifty-five leading experts in their respective fields deals with discontinuous conduction in the heart. Material in the book is based on presentations given at a workshop jointly sponsored by the Basic Science Council of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Chapters are organized into seven sections and present a series of views by the contributors, each encompassing a different dimension of cellular biological, molecular, or electrophysiological activity at various structural levels within the heart. Laboratory results and the implications for antiarrhythmic intervention are reviewed. New information on the diversity, structure, and function of different gap function proteins; the availability of new theoretical and cellular models to predict the effects of changes in discontinuities and ion flux on conduction; and new gene target strategies capable of altering currents and discontinuities in vivo are presented. A subject index, end-of-chapter references, electrocardiograms, and other illustrations accompany the text.
