, : An analysis of basal metabolic rate and blood cholesterol determinations. Archives of Dermatology and Syphilology 59(1): 22-30

Five cases of generalized exfoliative dermatitis or eczema are reported, in all of which there was a high BMR but also a high blood cholesterol. Each patient tolerated the admn. of thyroid extract and was apparently helped by it. It was thought that the BMR was due to restlessness and heat loss from a generally inflamed skin. The point stressed is that the blood cholesterol level is often reliable in estimating the need for thyroid medication, whereas the BMR may be misleading.
