An edentate from the Pleistocene of Texas

, : An edentate from the Pleistocene of Texas. Jour Paleontol 31(4): 796-808

Chlamytherium septentrionale (Leidy), 1889, a fossil edentate recovered from the Pleistocene of Houston, Texas is described. It is the most nearly complete remains of the sp. known today and reveals many features that were previously unknown. The find represents the 8th locality for this sp. in Texas. This skeleton is specifically identical with the remains on which the genus Holmesina Simpson was founded. There are insufficient differences between this and the type sp. of the genus Chlamytherium, C. humboldtii Lund, 1838, to warrant 2 separate genera, hence, Holmesina Simpson is considered a junior synonym of Chlamytherium Lund. Several features resemble those in the Dasy-podidae and Glyptodontidae and suggest for Chlamytherium an intermediate position between the 2 families, as previously proposed by Ameghino and Castellanos. Therefore the family Chlamytheridae (= Chlamydotheridae Ameghino, 1894) may be well founded.
