An Electrocardiographic Manifestation Of Pulmonary Disease

, : An Electrocardiographic Manifestation Of Pulmonary Disease. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society 11: 1077-1082

A study of the electrocardiograms of 259 patients is reported. The electrocardiographic patterns of patients with definite evidence of pulmonary disease were compared with the patterns of patients who had no evidence of pulmonary disease. It appears that the key electrocardiographic abnormality in diffuse pulmonary disease, particularly pulmonary emphysema, is verticalization of the mean P-wave axis, manifested by a clearly inverted P-wave in lead aVL. This simple sign apparently can be employed to detect diffuse pulmonary disease with an accuracy of at least 90 per cent.
