Analysis of earthquake induced displacements of embankments

, : Analysis of earthquake induced displacements of embankments. Indian Geotechnical Journal 35(4): 349-364

An attempt is made in this paper to obtain the earthquake induced ground displacements by strength reduction procedure and dynamic analysis using FEM. The results are compared with the displacements obtained using available empirical methods. To evaluate the displacements, a few analytical/empirical approaches are suggested in literature. There is a need to examine the applicability of these approaches as design tools to evaluate the earthquake induced deformations. It is also found essential to conduct deformation related stability analysis, as the conventional methods of stability analysis do not give importance to displacement-based approaches. The study suggests that strength reduction approach and displacement-based approach should be given more importance than the conventional factor of safety based approaches and empirical methods in the design and analysis of embankments subjected to earthquakes.
