Analytical interpretation of kriging estimation and the algebraic determination of covariance function parameters

, : Analytical interpretation of kriging estimation and the algebraic determination of covariance function parameters. Earth Science Journal of China University of Geoscience

The concept of function approximation using a rotating surface as a basic function is introduced. Then it is demonstrated that universal kriging may be expressed as a traditional weighted least-square fitting and as the function approximation with the rotating surface as a basic function. It is also demonstrated that the parameter of a covariance function can be determined by the mathematical analysis under certain conditions. Finally, this paper presents two principles for the determination of a covariance function's parameters, using the Gaussian function as an example.
