In Tucuman, Argentina, sugarcane is attacked, during its sprouting period (from October to November) by, among other pests, the lesser cornstalk borer <i>Elasmopalpus lignosellus</i>. The borer also attacks various other important crops in the region. The biology of the pest is outlined, and the damage that it causes described. Its occurrence is associated with poor and sandy soils, dry conditions and temperatures over 27 degrees C.
