Cytological responsiveness of the uropygial gland to castration in male roseringed parakeet, Psittacula krameri

, : Cytological responsiveness of the uropygial gland to castration in male roseringed parakeet, Psittacula krameri. Pavo 29(1-2): 9-14, 1991

Adult male Roseringed Parakeets (Psittacula krameri) were castrated during early breeding phase (Feb.) and held, along with sham control birds, under laboratory conditions for 60 days. Percentage of mitotic cells and diameter of interphase nuclei in the parenchymal cells in the uropygial gland of each bird were counted and measured respectively to evaluate the testicular influences, if any, on the cellular activities of the preen gland. Surgical removal of paired testes caused significant reduction in the number of dividing cells, but did not influence nuclear size of the resting cells in the uropygial gland of parakeet. The results are in support of the conjecture that testicular hormones play important role in the regulation of cell division in the uropygial gland in birds.

The transposition of this technique to the gas phase is appealing since it ope...
