Rats were given 200-1000 and then narcotized for 6 to 10 minutes and given artificial respiration. A monophasic electrocardiogram was taken with the contacts joined to the injured base of the left side of the stomach and the left foreleg. From the first hours after irradiation with a dose 1000, the duration of the excitation increased continuously over the whole period of the effect of irradiation. After irradiation with 500, the prolongation of period of excitation occurred in 2 stages during the next 1 to 7 and 13 to 14 days. After irradiation with 200, the period of excitation alternately increased and decreased around the normal level during the first 14 days. The refractory period, needed by the cardiac tissue to return to the initial level of polarization, decreased during the first hours after irradiation with doses ranging from 200 to 1000. These symptoms later increased continuously in those animals that had received 1000, while in those that had received 500 and 200 they alternately increased and decreased. The observed changes were a consequence of both direct and indirect X-raying of the heart.
