Secondary iron oxides (iron oxides, oxyhydroxides and oxyhydroxysulfates) precipitate in mines and mine waste frequently and attenuate dissolved metals and sulfates. Batch experiments were used to test the coprecipitation/adsorption of metals. The acid mine water from Sobov mine (pH 2.3) was mixed with various volumes of 0.1 M NaOH solution and seven neoformed solids and rest solutions were obtained (in pH range 2.5 to 7.1) and analysed. More than 96% of Mn and 99% of other metals dissolved in mine water (Fe, Al, Cu, Zn) were attenuated in solids. Concentration of sulfate in the solution decreased maximally to 13% of sulfate concentration of original mine water, and increased to 21% of it in neutral settings. The release of sulfate from natural Fe (super 3+) precipitates has been simulated in second set of experiment. Alkalinity generating agents Ca(OH) (sub 2) and CaCO (sub 3) were mixed with Fe (super 3+) precipitates, composed of amorphous Fe oxyhydroxides, jarosite, schwertmannite and goethite formed in mines and tailing impoundment drainages in wide pH range (2.4-7.2). The results of experiment indicated, that the aqueous sulfate concentration increased linearly with pH between 2.4 to 11.
