The behaviour of Aethiessa floralis visiting Onopordum macracanthum Schousboe

, : The behaviour of Aethiessa floralis visiting Onopordum macracanthum Schousboe. Elytron (Barcelona) 12(0): 69-76, 1998 ( )

The activity patterns of Aethiessa floralis (F., 1787) (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea, Cetoniidae) visiting Onopordum macracanthum Schousboe (Compositae) throughout the day were studied in a coastal ecosystem of Alicante (SE of Spain). Individuals were number-marked and tracked during their visits to O. macracanthum. Scarce intershrub movements and site constancy showed the sedentary character of Aethiessa floralis. However, like most cetonid species, they are able to fly long distances operating as dispersal agents of O. macracanthum pollen. The benefits obtained by the beetle are obvious, however, the benefit/damage to the plant ratio is discussed.
