Under the influence of methemoglobinemia caused by the intravenous injection of 15 to 30 mg/kg of NaNO3 in dogs, the interoceptive reflexes changed in 2 phases. The nature of the changes was the same as in previous experiments in which hypoxemia in the animals was caused by the inhalation of gaseous mixtures poor in O2 (Biull. Eksptl. Biol. i Med., 1955, 39(6): 32). In the first period the reflex rise in blood pressure caused by bulging of the belly increased, accompanied by a decrease in the threshold of stimulation and a general increase in the irritability of the animal. In the 2d phase depressor reflexes appeared in answer to stimulation of the receptors of the stomach, alternating with normal pressor reflexes after intravenous injection of methylene blue and inhalation of O2. Control experiments showed that, regardless of the theoretical possibility of conditioned-reflex changes of blood pressure, the results of the experiments described were not connected with the development of the corresponding conditioned reflexes. The prime mechanism of the 2-phased changes in the interoceptive pressor reflexes in the hypoxemic condition consists of a change in the irritability of the vasomotor and respiratory centers on disturbance of the regulatory function of the cerebral cortex.
