Ultrastructure of the hemopoietic organs in Sericinus montela Grey

, : Ultrastructure of the hemopoietic organs in Sericinus montela Grey. Korean Journal of Zoology 37(4): 514-523

Ultrastructural characteristics of the hemopoietic organs in Sericinus montela Grey were observed with light and transmission electron microscopes. The hemopoietic organs were located near or attached to the imaginal wing discs in the meso- and metathorax. Each organ was composed of several hemopoietic islets covered by acellular basement membrane. The hemopoietic islets were divided into two forms: the compact islets with undifferentiated stem cells closely juxtaposed and the loose islets composed of differentiating cells distributed separately. Hemopoietic differentiation took place in loose islets as indicated by the presence of prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, granular cells and spherule cells. They differentiated through individual cell lineages.
