Magnetic response to real and apparent motion from the human extrastriate cortex

, : Magnetic response to real and apparent motion from the human extrastriate cortex. Society for Neuroscience Abstracts 26(1-2): Abstract No -250 7

To investigate neural process underlying the detection of visual motion, we measured neuromagnetic response to onset of the real and apparent motion with varied speed and distance. Both motions of a light spot was created using a laser beam, which was moved on a screen by a galvanometer under control of PC. Seven speed levels ranging from 0.4 to 500 deg/s for real motion, and three distance levels (0.1, 1.0, and 5.0 deg) for apparent motion were used in this study. Peak latency of the magnetic responses as measured with a 37-ch neuromagnetometer (Magnes, BTi) was inversely related to the speed of real motion except the values for 500 deg/s ranging from 194 to 136 ms in mean across seven subjects' data. Surprisingly, durations to evoke the same latency responses could be reduced to 10 ms for the speed between 5 to 500 deg/s indicating that the latency change can not be explained merely by critical stimulus duration to activate motion detectors. Peak amplitudes were directly related to the speed of real motion, and also were related to the reciprocal of the latency except for 500 deg/s, which corresponded to the results of neural activities in monkey MT. Responses to the apparent motions were similar to those for the real motions with the same distance and the duration of 10 ms in terms of latencies and amplitudes. Although the human reaction time to the onset of the motion also was inversely related to the speed as the previous studies, it was not linearly correlated to the magnetic response latency suggesting that the whole neural process including motor preparation depends on the speed of motion.
