Influences of primary processing on surface properties of crude palygorskite ore

, : Influences of primary processing on surface properties of crude palygorskite ore. Congres Geologique International, Resumes 34: 3632

The high layer charge, specific surface area, elongate habit and unique fabric make palygorskite particularly functional in many environmental, agricultural and industrial applications. Traditional processes are generally employed to improve its quality and modify its material proper ties. In this study, the influences of various primary processing methods, including crushing, flocculation, squeezing and acid activation on the surface proper ties of crude palygorskite mined near the provincial boundary between Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces, eastern China, were examined. The low-temperature isotherms of nitrogen are employed to characterize the changes in specific surface area, surface fractal, pore size distribution, pore volume, surface energy heterogeneity caused by processes. In addition, the fabric change and dispersity of the processed palygorskite were also studied in laboratory. It is found that squeezing can remarkably modify its pore structure, pore volume, surface fractal, dispersity and ore fabric. Flocculation can improve the purity of palygorskite and thus increase the specific surface area and dispersity. Acid activation can clearly raise the specific surface area, surface fractal, volume of micropores and surface energy. However, the influence of crushing on all surface proper ties of the crude ores is hardly observed.
