Sedimentology and sediment processes in Gorgan Bay

, : Sedimentology and sediment processes in Gorgan Bay. Congres Geologique International, Resumes 33

The Gorgan bay as a recent coastal sedimentary environment with 509.3 km2 area is located at the south-east of Caspian Sea. Erosion, sediment transport and sever sedimentation by riverine, marine and eolian processes are the important sedimentary aspects of this great bay. The sedimentology investigations of Gorgan bay is the main scope of this research, which is based on marine measurements, laboratory analyses and GIS studies. Results showed that the four sediments texture groups are deposited in Gorgan bay. Sandy texture is the main sediment texture of Miankaleh and Ashoradeh Islands. Muddy texture also is dominated texture in Gorganroud and Gharesoo river deltas and east of Gorgan bay, and Sandy mud texture is developed to north and central parts of Gorgan bay that is converted to muddy sand toward south and south-west of bay where wave action is more affective. Chemical analyses also showed that chemical specification of Gorgan bay's sediments have two trends. Alkaline elements concentrations have increase in deep parts & center and north-west of Gorgan bay. For example, EC, Na+ and Cl- values increase from 4.5 to 8.5 (ms), 30 to 51(ml eq/lit) and then 34 to 57(ml eq/lit) in the center of bay. Marine measurements also indicate that sedimentation rates in bay entrance, along the bay and Miankaleh shore profiles are 10, 17.7 and 20 cm per year respectively.
