The structure of abductor and adductor leg muscles of the shore crab C. guanhumi, was studied by electron microscopy. Two different types of fibers were found, which have been designated A and B, respectively. A fibers are thick in diameter (about 180 .mu.m) and show short sarcomeres (4-6 .mu.m long). The M line appears diffuse and the Z line fine (approximate width = 133-145 nm), with a slightly jagged appearance. Cross sections of the A band showed irregular arrays of thin and thick filaments. Usually up to 15 thin filaments were found around a thick one. B fibers show a cross section diameter smaller than A fibers (approx. = 92 .mu.m). Long sarcomeres are present (7-10 .mu.m in length) and the Z lines are wide (approx. width = 260-280 nm), with a marked jagged appearance. Like A fibers, B fibers do not exhibit a distinct M line and show a large number of thin filaments (.ltoreq. 18) per thick filament. The sarcotubular system is well developed in both types of fibers, showing diads and triads at the level of A-I junctions. These structures are interconnected by a fenestrated collar - like sarcoplasmic reticulum. Mitochondria are observed in both types of fibers at the subsarcolemmal space, between myofibrils, in the vecinity of nuclei and at neuromuscular junctions. Both types of fibers possess a sarcoplasm rich in glycogen particles and are similarly innervated by several axons. Postsynaptic areas present some mitochondria, glycogen particles and narrow tubules which end in a labyrinth-like structure. A and B fibers may correspond to phasic and tonic fibers, respectively.
