Aspects de la biologie de reproduction du hibou petit-duc Otus scops

, : Aspects de la biologie de reproduction du hibou petit-duc Otus scops. Alauda, 592: 65-71

Between 1981 and 1990 various aspects of the breeding biology of the Scops Owl Otus scops were studied at the Ile d'Oleron (Charente-Maritime, France). During this period, the number of singing males (between 46 and 60) didn't noticeably vary after 129 nest-boxes destined for this species had been erected. This article refers to a total of 160 pairs that occupied nestboxes. 118 nesting adults and 357 pulli were ringed: there were 67 controls of birds recaptured at the nest. From one year to the next many birds returned to the same site, or nearby, to nest. The fidelity of two partners, for two seasons or more, consecutive or not, was proved. Both males and females can start to reproduce in their second calendar year. The mean size of a complete clutch is 4.2 .+-. 0.8 (N = 137). Most eggs are layed in late May or early June. One replacement clutch was recorded. The breeding success of 142 females was followed from incubation onwards: of 571 eggs laid, 77.9% hatched, at least 64.4% gave rise to a fledged chick. The earlier clutches had the highest success rate. The mean number of fledged young per studied female was 2.6 .+-. 1.5.
