1.1. Comparative osmotic pressure measurements of the blood and the pericardial fluid in five species of bivalves revealed an osmotic pressure gradient from the pericardial fluid toward the blood.2.2. Measurements of the ventricular hydrostatic pressures in the same five species of bivalves indicated that the systolic pressure of the ventricle is smaller than the osmotic pressure gradient.3.3. Therefore, ultrafiltration cannot take place across the ventricle into the pericardial cavity.
