Breeding biology of the partridge Perdix perdix in western Poland on the basis of radiotelemetric data Biologia Iegowa kuropatwy Perdix perdix w zachodniej Polsce na podstawie danych radiotelemetrycznych

, : Breeding biology of the partridge Perdix perdix in western Poland on the basis of radiotelemetric data Biologia Iegowa kuropatwy Perdix perdix w zachodniej Polsce na podstawie danych radiotelemetrycznych. Notatki Ornitologiczne, 433: 137-144

In 1995-2001 radiotagged Partridges from 64 pairs were observed from May to June in western Poland. Sixty-seven attempts at breeding were recorded; 45 nests were localised, and for 24 of them the clutch size was determined. The majority of nests (78%) had been built in vegetation growing spontaneously in uncultivated fragments of field (ditches, belts, side-spaces), and some nests (22%) in crops, mainly cereals. In areas with large-acreage crop fields all the nests were situated in spontaneous vegetation whereas among small fields nearly a half of the nests were located in cultivated plants. The incubation period started in the middle of May and lasted the middle of July, with a clear peak at the end of May (first clutches) and another, less distinct, peak at the end of June - early July (repeated clutches). All females which survived till the end of June began to incubate their clutch, and undertook another attempt at breeding after a loss of the first clutch unless it had occurred on the last days of incubation. The chicks hatched from the beginning of June until the middle of August. The clutches averaged 16.8 eggs (range: 11-24). The mean size of the first clutches (20.3 eggs) significantly exceeded that of repeated ones (13.8 eggs). In successful nests, 89% eggs hatched.
