Models of clinical epidemiological research in perinatology

, : Models of clinical epidemiological research in perinatology. Perinatologia Y Reproduccion Humana 3(2): 99-107

Characteristics of scientific research are presented and the requirements that must be met by any association in order to consider it as causal from an epidemiologic perspective. The 5 basic criteria are 1) strength; 2) consistency; 3) temporality; 4) specificity; and 5) plausibility. These must all be considered before designing scientific research without applying it to a specific model. The objective of this paper is to discuss the research strategy used in the Cohort Perinatal Studies and to determine if its methodology is valid. The model is based on 3 premises: 1) Perinatal morbi-mortality should first be conceptualized from a public health perspective, that is from a clinical-epidemiological one where the emphasis is directed at identifying those risk factors that can be prevented from a biological, psychological and social perspective. 2) The model must pinpoint the time frame of of events to be researched. 3) Strategies to identify the subjects should allow variability in bio-psychosocial conditions. An example of the research strategy used in Cohort Perinatal Studies is that of a study on Glucose Metabolism Alteration. The study concludes that the model allows identification of causal associations.
