The author responds to comments made by F. Ruttner (Journal of Apicultural Research (1991) 30 (2) 113-114) concerning his assessment of attempts by German bee breeders to replace the Apis mellifera mellifera population with A. m. carnica. Moritz sees no reason to continue to select a morphological character (e.g. cubital index) if it is no longer linked to the desired, race-specific behavioural traits.
